Rat (Rattus Norvegicus)

Brown Rat, Common Rat, Norway Rat, Sewer Rat (Rattus norvegicus)

History

The Rat originated from Asia and China . First recorded in Europe at the beginning of the 18th Century. They were referred to as Norway rats because they were thought to have travelled from the East on Norwegian timber ships.

Habit

R. Norvegicus must drink water daily unless the food source is extremely moist. They are considered omnivorous but if available, cereals seem preferred. They eat on average one tenth of their body weight each day.

R. Norvegicus explore locations quite freely.

However, it does have a fear of new objects. This is known as neophobia and this should be taken into account when baits are checked after an initial treatment.

Where will you find them?

Rats will normally be found under kitchen units, in basements, under garden sheds, under decking, behind bath panels and in roof voids to name just a few places.

How do we control rats?

Our technician will initially talk through the problems you are experiencing and explain what our treatment entails. He will then carry out a thorough inspection of your premises prior to any treatment and assess the level and extent of the infestation. Once this has been established he will then be able to carry out treatment to the appropriate areas. All our treatments are completely safe for children and animals and baits are placed in plastic tamper resistant bait boxes where necessary. Once our treatment is complete we will detail our work in an inspection report and leave this with you, our technician will then arrange a convenient time to carry out a follow up visit.

Problems caused by Rats

The most common problem comes from the brown rat. As well as spreading disease, contaminating food and water, rats are also destructive to property and will chew on almost anything.  Rats can also bite and are especially a problem if there are babies or very young children around.

Identify a Rat problem

In the home you will usually find rats in the kitchen, under cupboards, behind fridges and appliances, under decking, behind sheds or in roof spaces, although they can get into most places within the home. Most commonly you will either hear them scratching or spot signs of rats droppings first, which look like large brown pellets. You will often see signs of the damage they leave behind where they have chewed through things, often food containers or wood.  Rats can be found living outside around 3% of dwellings in London Essex and Hertfordshire.

We provide Rat pest control services for all of London Essex Kent Surrey Hertfordshire and Cambridge.

Pest control treatment for Rats Call 0203 600 0401

As with most of our pest control treatments, we usually do two visits as a follow up visit allows us to make sure any actions we take are successful. Our fully trained pest control technician starts by talking to you about the problems you are having before assessing the situation.  Please be aware that the pest controller will often need to inspect other areas and not just the visible source.

Once the pest controller has established  the source and size of the problem , they will then be able to apply treatment to the appropriate areas. All our treatments are safe for children and animals and any baits are placed inside a plastic, tamper resistant bait box if necessary. Rats do fear of new objects, known as neophobia and this is taken into account when baits are checked after an initial treatment.

As with all our treatments, the pest control technician will leave a report with you with details of any treatments and recommendations.  If a follow up visit is likely to be needed, our technician will arrange a suitable date and time with you. Generally this will be about a week or two later and sometimes a second treatment is required.
